What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word "Islam"? Do you know what this word means?

  1. The first thing that comes into my mind is: “remember the tree of Islam”. There is a story behind this.

I am in a class that focuses on Islam and the cultures that have evolved out of the religion. In the class we have read some books (e.x. No god but God by Reza Aslan) which has helped to create a foundation for my understanding of Islam. Through the book, I learned the history of the Prophet and how Islam expanded into what it has become today. Also, I have looked at the impact the religion has had on the world paradigm.

Hence, as an exercise, a group of classmates had to draw a pictorial representation of the different sects of Islam. They drew a tree with the 5 pillars as the roots, Muhammad as the trunk, two branches splitting off to represent Sunni and Shi’ite sects, and a flower on the side to represent Sufi.

This representation helped me to always remember the diversity Islam has within itself, just as much as any other religion. It also helps me to understand where some of the ideologies come from and thus improves my understanding of the religion. Therefore, whenever I hear Islam or am asked what I think of it, I go to the “tree of Islam” and then can talk with people, having that basic foundation.

I am not sure what the second question is referring to for the “this word”, but if it is connection with “Islam”, I have a very basic understanding of the word. I do not speak Arabic and thus cannot give the etymology of the word, but most commonly the word is translated to English to mean, “submission”, in reference to God or Allah. I have the understanding that God is the highest being and that he is in control of people’s lives and that it is up to Him to decide what will happen to people, therefore creating a trusting bond between Him and the individual (also known as Muslim (one who submits (to God)).
